Petite Rivière Noire, situated in the Black River District is the southern sister town of Grande Rivière Noire located just 5km away. It's around 37km west of the island's capital of Port Louis and is home to only 2 000 residents. Petite Rivière Noire is 53km West of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, and the drive will take you just over an hour, along the M2.

Petite Rivière Noire remains a relaxing seaside town with a stretch of quiet beach, and the popular, azure blue bay to enjoy with the family. Close to La Preneuse and Tamarin, Petite Rivière Noire is a nature lover's paradise and has incredible activities for family outings with kids. Sailing, snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding, dolphin spotting, hiking, and fishing are some island favourite's in this area.

One of the main attractions in this area is Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire which is the highest peak in all of Mauritius sitting at 828m above sea level. Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire is an outdoor enthusiast's dream, and here you can discover viewpoints of the Morne Brabant lagoon and the Black River Gorges.

Situated in a small bay, you'll need to travel towards Tamarin (9km) and Flic-en-Flac (21km) in the North to find more developed shopping centres like Cascavelle, Ruisseau Créole, and Barachois Shopping Centres for all your speciality retail needs.

Schools in the District

Petite Rivière Noire is 9km south of Tamarin, home to all the top schools in the Black River District. Right in this district's centre lies Telfair International Primary School a mere 8km from Petite Rivière Noire bay. There is also the Paul et Virginie School, a French-medium primary school about 10km away named after the famous 16th century novel by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre.

For older students, Westcoast International Secondary School is 18km north of Petite Rivière Noire, in Cascavelle and the primary school is right next to it. The primary and secondary schools are both English-medium private schools.
