Grande Rivière Noire is situated in the Black River District and is a small laid back town close to Tamarin. It's around 27km west of the island's capital of Port Louis and is home to just under 2500 residents. Grande Rivière Noire is 55km West of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, and the drive will take you just over an hour, along the M2.
Development in the Area
Development is on the rise, but this remains an uncrowded area with stretches of quiet beaches to enjoy. Close to Tamarin, Grande Rivière Noire is a nature lover's paradise and has incredible activities for family outings with kids and adrenaline junkies alike. Sailing, snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding, dolphin spotting, fishing, birding, hiking and mountaineering are some of the top things to do in the area.
Being quite a small town in the region, you'll need to travel towards Flic-en-Flac about 13km north to find more developed shopping centres like Cascavelle, Ruisseau Créole, and Barachois Shopping Centres for all your speciality retail needs.
Schools in the District
Grande Rivière Noire is just 4km south of Tamarin, home to all the top schools in the Black River District. Right in the centre of this district lies Telfair International Primary School a mere 3km from Grande Rivière Noire. This small and welcoming school allows for individual attention to students and is one of the most popular and beloved schools in the district. There is also the Paul et Virginie School, a French-medium primary school about 6km away.
For older students, Westcoast International Secondary School is 13km north of Grande Rivière Noire, in Cascavelle and the primary school is right next to it. The primary and secondary schools are both English-medium private schools.
