Tamarin at a glance

For a change of pace, exquisite sunset panoramas await in sleepy Tamarin, situated in the Black River District, and named after the tamarind trees brought over by the Dutch settlers. This fishing village is mostly residential and popular with South African expatriates.

Climate

Mauritius has warm island weather all year round, and the Black River District is no exception. Average temperatures in the cooler months from July to September sit around 18°C to 27°C. During the hottest months from December to the end of February, the temperatures can reach well into the 30s but the days are usually a pleasant 24°C.

Development in the Area

Development is on the rise, but this remains an uncrowded area with stretches of quiet beaches to enjoy. Luxury yachts can be seen anchored close to the newly developed La Balise Marina, and upmarket guesthouses are dotted around the bay. There are even one or two night clubs for a night on the town.

Previously known as Santosha bay and nestled around Tamarin Mountain (La Tourelle de Tamarin), Tamarin is the place to go for a wide variety of ocean activities. Despite the shifting tides and reef erosion, it remains a surfer's paradise from July to September and dolphins are seen daily.

Boating trips, snorkelling or stand-up paddle boarding can be organised for sightings of bottlenose and spinner dolphins around the bay. Game fishing is world-class, and Grande Rivière Noire holds the Mauritian record for the largest Blue Marlin caught at a staggering 1355 pounds.

Mountaineering is on your doorstep here as the Black River Gorges National Park provides excellent climbing routes on Le Morne Mountain. You can explore the mountain with a guide as well if you'd like an experienced local to show you the ropes. If heights are not your thing, there are some 170kms of trails to explore with lush forest and wonderful birdlife to discover. There are several marked trails and some lead you to the mountain peaks around Pétrin or Macchabée.

Tamarin is 53km West of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, and the drive will take you around an hour and ten minutes, along the M2.

Schools in the District

Tamarin is home to all the top schools in the Black River District. Right in the centre of Tamarin lies Telfair International Primary School. This small and welcoming school allows for individual attention to students and is one of the most popular and beloved schools in the district. There is also the Paul et Virginie School, a French-medium primary school. For older students, Westcoast International Secondary School is a mere 10km north of Tamarin, in Cascavelle and the primary school is right next to it. The primary and secondary schools are both English-medium private schools.
